Rock Hall Bound: Fifth Time’s The Charm For Rage Against The Machine!

See who else the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame Will induct with the Class of 2023.

The Rock Hall recruited 2021 inductee LL Cool J to announce this year’s additions.

Don’t have time for the 90-second video? Here’s the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame Class of 2023.

Willie Nelson
George Michael
Missy Elliott
Sheryl Crow
Rage Against The Machine
The Spinners
Kate Bush

This year’s performer class bucks the recent trend of the Fan Vote tracking pretty closely with the final results. George Michael won the fan vote, but Rock Hall voters snubbed the rest of the top 5 – Cyndi Lauper, Warren Zevon, Iron Maiden, and Soundgarden.

Rage Against The Machine is finally in after five nominations spanning seven years. Kate Bush matched Rage’s recent run of four nominations in five years. I thought this time around was “2023 or bust” for Kate Bush considering her Stranger Things-fueled resurgence. The Rock Hall nominated soul legends The Spinners four times since 2011. George Michael, Willie Nelson and Sheryl Crow were each first-time nominees.

When the Rock Hall announced 2023 nominees in February, I wrote a whole paragraph about The White Stripes. I found their first-year-of-eligibility nomination quite interesting considering Jack White’s legacy as exactly the kind of ambassador for rock & roll that The Hall loves. Turns out, voters put more importance on finally inducting the Rock Hall’s first female rapper. Congratulations, Missy Elliott!

With each class, the Rock Hall chooses a handful of inductees from across the industry regardless of votes. This year, Musical Excellence Inductees include soul singer Chaka Khan, Elton John’s songwriting partner Bernie Taupin, and musical multi-hyphenate Al Kooper. Early hip hop pioneer DJ Kool Herc and guitar legend Link Wray get Musical Influence inductions. And this year’s Ahmet Ertegun Award – an induction for a non-performing music industry professional – goes to Don Cornelius, who hosted the TV show Soul Train for nearly two thirds of its 36-year run and introduced hundreds of R&B, soul, and hip hop artists to viewers before the Internet made music discovery so accessible.
