Judas Priest will also receive “Musical Excellence” honors as part of the Class of 2022
It’s official! The Rock Hall tabulated the votes and has unveiled this year’s inductees.
All five are first-time nominees on the Rock Hall ballot, despite most of them being eligible for decades. Eminem is the exception. He now ranks among the short list of artists who earned induction in their first year of eligibility. Artists are eligible for the Rock Hall 25 years after their first commercial release.
Dolly Parton’s induction may come with some controversy. She initially asked to be removed from the ballot because she didn’t feel she earned enough rock accolades, but eventually changed her mind.
How does the Class of ’22 compare to the list of artists who topped the Fan Vote?
The Fan Vote comprises ONE ballot out of approximately 500 that the Rock Hall sends to its experts. The fans nailed three out of five, with Pat Benatar and the Eurythmics among nominees who now must wait for another year.
Now, induction as a “performer” is the most common road into the Rock Hall, but there are others. The Rock Hall has “Music Excellence” and “Early Influence” awards, not to mention the Ahmet Ertegun Award for music industry professionals. So who else is joining the Class of 2022?
Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis (producer duo)
Sylvia Robinson (Sugar Hill Records founder)
Jimmy Iovine (Music Mogul. Watch ‘The Defiant Ones’ documentary)
Allen Grubman (music industry lawyer)
That’s right! Judas Priest are finally getting into the Rock Hall with a Musical Excellence Award! 2022 was their third year on the ballot, they’ve been eligible since 1998. Another great reason for them to continue celebrating their “50 Heavy Metal Years”.
