Coachella announced Rage Against The Machine as a headliner, and hilarious Internet reactions ensued.
Move over, Billie Eilish and Van Halen. The rock crowd has a new target of ridicule! Music festival goers that have no idea who Rage Against The Machine are!
Coachella’s announcement comes as no surprise to those who’ve been paying attention to the latest Rage reunion. The band published a few dates and cities back in November. The listing included Indio, California – the site of Coachella – on back to back weekends in April. A dead giveaway.
Nonetheless, Rage Against The Machine isn’t exactly top of mind with the young people of today. And we’ll get to that.
In the meantime, enjoy the gallery of hilarious, ignorant tweets collected by Grimy Goods.
Let’s put Rage’s cultural relevance in perspective. The last time Rage Against The Machine released an album, today’s 30-year-old was likely 10. Rock music and its fans retain much more of the genre’s history than other popular genres. It’s why I was so on-board with Wolfgang Van Halen’s defense of Billie Eilish. Alienating and ridiculing young people for not knowing rock music isn’t gonna bring them on board any faster.
On the other hand, there are also plenty of folks on social media who know Rage and complain that RATM shouldn’t play Coachella for various reasons. Like ‘woke-ness’ and sellout implications…
Philip Anschutz and his wife donated $1.2 million to the Republican Party.
Anschutz is the owner of Coachella.
This doesn’t seem like the type of event Rage Against the Machine would participate in given their political stances.
I guess everyone has their price. https://t.co/GmPG2VOGiC

Or… what’s the opposite of implication? Oh right… sellout accusations…
Rage Against The Machine playing Coachella might be the greatest act of selling out since Judas Iscariot spilled the beans.

Thankfully, some people are excited and have a better sense of humor about this whole thing.
